You're still defining "God" the same way you used to when you were christians. And when you think of "religion", you just think of those idiots marching the streets with signs saying : "Repent for your sins"... but some day, I hope you'll travel and see there are no idiots like that outside of the USA...
There are even varieties of Christian practice within the USA which will be markedly different than whatever anyone experienced personally. You're right some of us tend toward parochialism. But I'm surprised you have a beef with Alex. That's pretty rare.

But you seem to prefer the idea it were meant to manipulate people from the beginning, which sounds as an arbitrary and illogic argument. The word "God" exists in every culture. Everyone has a concept for a "supernatural being" and the primitive tribes do not produce all that you associate with "god" and "religion"... Why is that if "god" and "religion" always lead to whatever you claim it does?
I also think of god outside the box, but I don't think "life" is a good substitute. The word you find fits in best as a substitute for the most expressions including the word "god" does not seem like a good way to go about making sense of what "god" could mean. It doesn't seem like a good way to try to account for the pervasive, longterm tenure of god belief on this planet.
