RE: Cognitive dissonance

Dissonance is the -effect- of the inconsistency. It's taken to be a negative effect. I could have use the words hurt, discomfort, tension, turmoil, inner conflict......I chose anxiety as representative of them all. If one holds contradictory positions, without realizing it, there's no dissonance. That's the place that the sort of believers you guys are referring to -live-. They don't see their positions as contradictory or mutually exclusive. They see no need for reconciliation.
They may be wrong, they may not have approached their position in an intellectually rigorous manner, they may be batshit crazy...but what they are -not-..is suffering from cognitive dissonance on account of that.
