Well what would you do if they started talking about something, and had a different political lean than you?
You could always learn to try to steer the conversation away. Not always easy with the religious though.
My husband nearly had his ear cut off as a kid. As you might can imagine, he doesn't like getting his hair cut, so normally I have to do it.
