While you may be right that there were some players that automatically raised a 45 RPM adapter from the platter, my experience is that the below photo is much more commonly the case. That's my Grundig from the '60s. I don't even know if it has a model number. It does say 'stereo' on the tuner face which is why I date it to the '60s rather than the '50s. Generally there was a separate adapter that rode in a clip until needed when it was removed and placed on the center spindle. For those who haven't seen this tech, there was a catch about 3 inches above the turntable. You could stack vinyl discs on this step and they would be dropped one by one. The tone arm moved up/down, in and out in coordination with the dropped discs to play them in turn. Think the "normal" (play next) play mode on your MP3 player.
So how, exactly, does God know that She's NOT a brain in a vat?
