What always has been wrong with it since 1978, I believe. When the Supreme court ruled corporations to have human rights, or something along that line, when it comes to donations. The result are unlimited campaign bribes for politicians playing corporate ball. The result is also that only well funded candidates stand a chance of being elected into any office. Wether it's their own money or the money they're collecting. The donators, of course, expect something in return. So these folks don't really represent the people but their donors.
America is worst in that department, but that doesn't say, it's much better in any other part of the world. The rent a politician mentality has long reached the shores of Europe and Asia. It's worst withing the EU structures, since, as opposed to national parliaments, what happens at Brussels is largely removed from the public eye. So, lobbyists go in and out there, but I want to stress, it's still about national politicans, their parties sent there to represent their people within the EU. So it's not some unknown and faceless body we're talking about.
One of our former ministers got jail time a couple of years ago, because, at his later job at Brussels, as leader of the conservative delegation, he was too open for accepting bribes and walked right into the trap of some british journalists.
