People often sell themselves short.
I've taught many people who have said "I can't do maths". They were convinced it was impossible for them to learn it. Yet in most cases, I did manage to teach them successfully.
Such reactions might be due to an experience (or many) causing them to negatively associate with the subject, or just a general lack of confidence.
