So, I would've made the afterlife a lot more nicer than eternal punishment if I wanted to increase the chance of converting people into my invented religion instead of making them feel threatened by the religion.
Christianity didn't become so entrenched and so powerful from the promise of heaven, it grew out of the fear of eternal damnation and burning forever, along with threats, torture, execution and Inquisitions. It was implanted in the minds of the ignorant and uneducated. Most modern day educated people, I feel sure would not believe a word of it.
We don't need to "assume" that hell was a man-made invention, it most definitely was.
There are many intelligent Christians, no doubt, but an "intellectual Christian", is surely an oxymoron.
