That kind of mindset is indeed perpetuating the problem. As long as the region turn into a warzone every now and then, there will be no turning to secularism. Patriotism and nationalism are strong driving forces. And they can be exploited for every intent and purpose. One has to keep in mind that - in certain countries - there are whole generations growing up with war and lacking the most basic commodities we are so used to. If there's no future, it's not that hard to imagine what these persons grow up to be. Revenge on the ones they consider responsible for their misery probably isn't that far from their minds.
