The point was that cancer is caused by cells becoming worse. This implies that (because not getting cancer has historically been the norm) that cells are slowly losing their capacity to function. This means that they were more functional in the past. This means that instead of moving from the bottom up, we are either moving from the top down, or from the bottom, to the top, back down.
