There is absolutely no evidence that a single prayer has ever had a positive effect, outside of the beneficial effects of self reflection (which doesn't need prayer), and significant evidence that it may be harmful, for example the Templton prayer study, whose results showed that patients who were prayed for and knew they were being prayd for recovered less well than those in the group who weren't prayed for.
