What they never told you in their propaganda, hammered into everyone's heads since the 50ies, is that social democracy more or less represents the American ideal. Equal opportunities for everyone, which means free, or at least affordable education and universal healthcare. It's about not throwing you to the wolves, just because you happen to be born into a poor environment. And it's about protecting you in your workplace environment against being paid a slave wage, being fired on a whim and being exposed to dangerous workplace conditions. It's not about abolishing the free market or private ownership.
There's quite a distinction between communism, socialism and social democracy. Although they all draw from the same 19th century ideals. Born out of the excesses of the industrial age. Suffice to say that it was Bismarck introducing universal healthcare in Germany. Certainly not a bleeding heart and certainly not a socialist. Just a realist, observing that a content population is less likely to fall for radicalism or to rebell.
