My understanding from most Christians I hear from, both here on the forums and in real life, is that each person develops a personal relationship with, and therefore an individual under standing of, god. I think a lot of other religions, like Hinduism, would say the same.
So if one Christian can say their god is loving and does not endorse slavery, while another says he is vengeful, and did endorse it in the past as long as certain rules were followed, why can't a third say god is like a slug? The 3 versions have about as much in common. All are equally personal and equally absurd.
