Sounds to me like that family brainwashed you, I read allot of books too and yes there are some greatly beutiful, fantastic sounding ones. But remember its just a book, written by people, it even says in the bible "this was not written by men, but by god"(hint hint). I know it sounds awesome and we all fear death in one way or another but it's just a book. I like the lord of the rings, but i don't take it as devine truth.
Live every day as if already dead, that way you're not disappointed when you are.
