The news is full of stories where the single mom hates the father but snatches the kid and pimps the kid off to a guy who will abuse or kill him for her.  In other cases the woman will make nice with a guy so that he will foot the bill while the kid grows up and then she will dump him.  In some cases the woman will marry a guy but sneak off to bang the kid's father every chance she gets.  If a guy gets involved with a single mom he shouldn't delude himself and go into it with both eyes open.  Chances are he's being played for a sucker.  Remember Mary and Joseph.
