Why are there so many single fathers?

The presumption that most single parents are mothers is accurate. According to the Census data:

Approximately 82.2% of custodial parents are mothers, and
17.8% of custodial parents (approximately 1 in 6) are fathers

I'm curious though, why are there so many single mothers?

Dude. So all the fathers to the kids of those single mothers died? Don't exist? Not having custody does not make them stop being fathers. It takes two to make a baby.
