Based on real life cases in the news it's very stressful when people go through nasty divorces and when kids are involved. Usually the woman wants to be a bitch and deprive the father of a meaningful relationship with his rug rats. She's so intent on being spiteful that she doesn't see that the guy is being consumed with grief and rage. She thinks that he's sane when in reality he's about to become a homicidal maniac. It seems silly to want the kids of someone you've grown to hate. That seems like false love. Every time you look at them you see the image of the person you now despise so how can you fully love them?
Guys might get wrapped up in pride and vanity. They see their hopes and dreams being destroyed. Maybe they were at fault and maybe they weren't. But they care too much to face the loss of their family.
It's the caring that causes their unhappiness and leads to tragedy. If they were able to suppress their caring when the woman is intent on depriving them of a meaningful relationship with their kids they would simply write them off as dead on the divorce day and emotionally bury all memories of them (without actually going nuts and killing them). The man could then move on and find a better woman. He might even have better kids with her. Of course he will be stuck with child support for years but he could regard it as just another utility bill.
