Pardon?

The cold war finished in 1991,with the collapse of the soviet union. Events lead to that event included the solidarity movement in Poland (from 1980) and removal of the Berlin wall and the reunification of Germany in 1989.

There is not now nor has there ever been a communist state or one controlled by communism. There are and have been totalitarian states with communist/socialist features. The ideology of communism is innately democratic. (read Marx).
