Why is a tosser a tosser?

We like to use cunt in Scotland. As an insult and term of endearment. Particularly in my city of Glasgow, you hear everyone yelling "ya fucking cunt" to their friends all the time.

But mate also suffices too.  

Yeah I can picture that... I love Robert Carlyle and that's just how he talks 

I think my favourite, and one that kind of passes for both an insult and term of endearment, is numpty
