It's a Unixy thingy for systems using the graphics system X Window. If you ssh from one Unix machine to another, you can allow the program you run remotely to send graphics commands to your local system (in Linux, it's simply the command line option ssh -X), and that allows you to use programs with a graphical user interface via SSH. It's horribly slow if you don't have a perfect internet connection, and there have always been compatibility issues for me, but it worked for emergencies.
