The word "before" was confusing to me, as I read it as "prior to" anyone else . . .

But, I think you must mean it as a preventive measure?

 No I meant it as no one else suffered serious illness or died until those who tried to disrupt God's plan became seriously ill or died. I can't make this plainer than thi, so if you are still confused I'm sorry.
