Sure, except that they were under duress from white colonials, who cleverly manouvered their angst onto a group that they conveniently hated themselves. We supported isreal because of the holocaust...except that we actually didn't. We let them whither in the desert until it was clear that they could handle their shit. We routinely denied isreal aid, even made it illegal to aid isreal. They actually had to smuggle their rinky dink airforce in...and recruit pilots, also smuggled in, who were threatened with all manner of nasty legal consequences...until they beat the shit out of their neighbors. See, we never really liked jews either.
Then, and only then...the light bulb came on in the halls of american power. If this tiny group of people, beholden to us, can embarrass all comers in a strategically important area surrounded by oilfields.....we might have something on our hands. Harris, here, though...thinks that we're the puppets, and that the jews were the masters. Talk about hoodwinked.
As to us staying out of the middle east....nah, we were all over that shit, cold war besties - until we weren't. Our relationship with the middle east has changed, fundamentally, in living memory...and it didn't happen -because- of our support of isreal or -because- we meddled...used to be we meddled in their favor. We also didn't overly concern ourselves with how much our then-besties wanted to destroy our own newly minted allies. Our eye was on the prize. Mother Russia.
