I think coming to terms with it not mattering really frees you up to just enjoy yourself. There's this burden that's put upon us to live life a certain way with certain goals and try to have certain accomplishments. Like we get some prize after we die, rather than just ceasing to exist.
So the people that could be happy the way they are, are bombarded with "You're not doing it right", and then when they "do it right", they don't find happiness in it.
It takes a certain mindset, but if you can shut out the incoming noise, and just live however you want, I think that's the way to go. But if that way doesn't conform to the standard rules, then it's going to be very hard to ignore the negativity projected onto you from others.
Answering the question more directly, we are an evolutionary anomaly. And the anomaly, is that we're capable of living a purpose free life. Our awareness of what we are allows us to overcome many of the compulsions that are dictating the behavior of most animals. For example, we can not have kids because it seems like a lot of work. And you can just do that. That freedom is a pretty big deal, I think. 100's of millions of years of evolution poured into the survival of the species, and we can just go "Not for me." Bit of a ramble there, but there's something to that, that I find fascinating.
