D&D is fantasy, not an exercise in random number generation. It's about the story, not rolling a 16+ to escape some gruesome death.
The worst DMs I ever knew were random number generator who delighted in offing PCs wholesale. Why put any time I to a character when you've only got a coin flips chance at best of living past your second beverage?
