Another thing that bears mention...the nastiest shit we still use is -not- to kill bugs. Bugs are (relatively) easy to kill with modern, fast fading pesticides. The most profitable component of DDT use, in the ag sector, was to combat -disease- for which certain bugs (like whitefly) where the most common vectors.
Whitefly, btw, still alive...still spreading disease, still costing millions.
@ Alex...as regards the above. The predictions made in Silent Spring have, since it's publication, simply not panned out. Now, here's the thing...the book at least got us thinking about it...and so I would say that ultimately, mentioning that the conclusions in that book were as sketchy as the methods used to arrive at them is one thing..and true, but it did at least get us thinking. Had our systems not changed (in some part as a response to such fears./..founded or not) they may have materialized.
