Why is life programmed to survive?

I don't think there is a reason why we are programed to survive. Programmed is probably the wrong word in the first place. I mean if life were not programed to survive then it wouldn't survive and therefore wouldn't be life anyway. Maybe there was some form of something similar to life that lacked the will to survive. Whatever that was, it's not around anymore nor would it last in this hostile world of ours. The will to survive is an inherent part of life.
