The technical description of LIGO shows, what the mirrors do not hung freely, isn't it? You have the information from the Wikipedia, haven't you? The Wikipedia is way too primitive source of information.
The mirrors are suspended from elaborate multi-stage pendulums in order to be insulated from the movement of the ground, and enable them to move practically freely along the beam axis which is what matters here.
