I don't think I ever suggested that America had it all right, but the whole point of the American system is that the are three branches of government, two of which are voted for directly by citizens. The president can influence policy but ultimately things happen because Congress votes on it.
I agree that electronic voting is bad. However don't pretend that pencil and paper voting is impossible to temper with. Erasers exist.
Letting the party elect the president is an awful idea, mainly because there isn't necessarily a majority party in Congress. Often the Senate will be controlled by a separate party to the House. On top of that, I think that allowing the entire US to vote for their leader is a much more democratic way of doing things than choosing an elected official from the party itself. Not to mention that the President cannot be a member of Congress at the same time, so some district representative or even a state will be lacking a representative in Congress.
