Yes, he really is trying to say that Devil's Tower was once a giant tree.
I remember snorting drink out my nose when he talked of the perfect geometry of trees and than mentioned honeycombs. :-)
Jesus Christ... a little funny, but very sad that anyone can be stupid enough to think that. I mean, Devil's Tower must have been a one of a kind tree, because we don't see other "tree stumps" like that all over the place. And where did the giant log go? How did Devil's Tower petrify into rock but the log rotted away? And if that mountain was once a tree, then that tree must have extended far into space way above the atmosphere where the leaves wouldn't be able to exchange CO2 for oxygen, not to mention be destroyed by all the cosmic radiation our atmosphere filters out.
Of course, there I go applying logic to nutty woo beliefs.
