The left took way too much for granted. While they accused Trump of running a divisive campaign, their campaign was no less divisive, pitting men against women, whites against minorities, police against black communities, xenophobia, homophobia, their pompous assed attitudes that only the uneducated didn't agree with them, yada, yada, yada. Where did it get them? They focused too much on the heavily populated counties of each state that had the inner cities and thumbed their noses at the working class in the rural areas. The black vote was down, the latino didn't make up the gap for the low turn out for black voters, they didn't get as much of the women's vote they expected, and their once loyal voting base, the blue collar working class, went for Trump. The Republicans were able to do what seemed impossible, flip blue states that hadn't voted red in 20 - 30 or so years.
Pretty much spot on, and yet they wonder how Trump kept storming ahead all these months going completely against conventional thinking of a way a president should act. Due to the PC culture where thought and words are enforced by the left, everyone sat quietly by slowly getting fed up with the culture war. Trump is a response to the left taking things way too far, with like you said accusing everyone who disagreed with their inverted ideological world view as bigoted, racist, xenophobic, Islamophobic, trans-phobic, misogynist... I could go on because they have so many labels to try and shut up and besmirch their adversary that it became a joke that those words lost their effectiveness.
Then to top it off with all the bizarre behavior the left displayed in their chants and marches against Trump in the run up to the election, people started to not want to join their cause. Burning American flags, waving Mexican flags, spouting slander against anyone who disagreed with them, they made themselves look like complete fools. I was here posting months ago telling people Trump would win for basically those reasons. Plus having illegal immigrants making demands, and useful idiot white liberals putting words in the mouths and speaking for minorities.
