Here's a thought. If people don't want to be called bigots, maybe they shouldn't hitch their wagon to bigots.
Another side of that to consider:
A while back, a facebook friend was claiming that criticisms of Obama are racism. Meaning you can't disagree with Obamacare, with tax policy, with drone strikes, none of that, or you're racist.
I don't think it's that they're really offended by being called bigots or racist anymore; I think that, when the left calls people racist, it's kinda starting to be ignored. The boy cried wolf one too many times and now nobody believes him, despite the fact that there are several very real wolves there that need to be dealt with.
