I very strongly considered breaking it during the three hours it was going off. It could not be consoled with batteries, button pushing or anything else. It's hardwired to the freaking house too, so I couldn't fuck with it. Plus, I was afraid it would freak out if I unplugged it. I put in ear plugs and tried desperately to fall back asleep to no avail.
They have a shelf life. Usually if they chirp three times with a minute in between, the alarm itself is dead; no batteries will help. (There should be a little guide on the side of the alarm that faces the ceiling.)
You can unplug them from the house, no problem. Sometimes that trips the system, but you can reset it afterwards.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
