Foreign scientists don't feel welcome though and worry about whether they can build a future in the UK. They live under a cloud of uncertainty about their future. More so than normal as a scientist. Especially when you read of cases where they apply for permanent residence, have to jump over many hoops and if they don't fill out the form 100% correctly are then told that they should be prepared to leave the UK within weeks after having lived here for 20 years, married a native and have children born here.
Short fixed term contracts are really common in academia and science. Scientists go to many international conferences where they can be offered jobs by other scientists. Most academic institutions around the world have knowledge of English because most papers are written in English. So it's not hard for scientists to move out of the UK or US.
