I think most older people, myself included, have never seen any politician come anywhere near the levels of self delusion and lying in the manner Trump does. Even when caught red handed on tape. This is unprecedented. (Unless you count Kim Jong Un)  Even when his own advisers tell him it's self destructive he can't seem to stop and that's one of the reasons I see it as pathological.

Theres a name for the effect that you're expressing above, though it escapes me.  Human beings have a demonstrable tendency to remember the most recent and forget the past.  I think that you could spend a few hours on the interwebs and jog your memory as to the craven dishonesty of politicians at every level of government now and all the way back to the beginning of recorded history.

A normal, run of the mill asshole doesn't care that he didn't win the popular vote because he won the election. To an asshole, who cares what the majority thinks if you've won. Trump on the other hand can't get over it. He's still fuming about it and launching investigations into voter fraud over an election HE WON!

He's locked into his shit, he kept claiming that there was fraud, and backing out now would be -obvious- dishonesty.....this is pretty much standard operating procedure.  Remember how long the last republican administration insisted that there were weapons of mass destruction in iraq? Anybody down for a slice of yellow cake?
