If CA and NY try to secede...I'm not so sure anyone will try to stop them.
If so they would be shooting themselves in the foot. Considering that they would take 21.4% of the U.S. economy with them, and that both states pay much more in federal taxes than they receive in federal funding, it would be interesting to see how the rest of the country fared if they left. Unfortunately, as someone not living in either state I'm afraid the results would be catastrophic. Not that I think that New York and California could win a civil war. In the Civil War the North won because that is where the industrial and economic power were. In the case of a California versus the rest of the country battle it's not so clear. California's production is high tech, but not very militarily based. New York is about financing not production. But regardless of outcome the defection of either state would kill the U.S. economy.
