I've known a lot of people in a similar sense to what you have described. A few years back, a new hire at work, he and I shared some similar interests. So, we struck up one those brief work style friendships.  One day he saw me talking to a homosexual co-worker that I'm friends with. (I don't care about status, if your a homosexual, transgender, or whatever. If we share some common ground I'll have a conversation with you about the subject.) He asked me one day, "Why are you talking to a homosexual?, don't you know their life styles are wrong!" I was kinda of thrown back at what he said. After I told, that I did not care about a persons race or sexual identity. He got mad and never talked to me again in a personal fashion.

      Your in tough place, if you support her niece if it will put in a difficult position with your stepson. But from what you said, to me he's not worth getting along with. Support her niece and maybe he will calm down a bit

I have always supported my wife's niece, (I've known the niece since 2001) even when the niece was in an open relationship with a lesbian, and even when her mother (my wife's sister) used to treat her daughter like shit, and try to use her as a go-between for drug deals by threatening to have the child placed into care if she didn't pick up and drop of drugs (mostly meth), so the niece moved here, away from her drug abusing mother, her father is absolutely obsessed with Startrek, and has totally become alienated from the family, he's gone as far as even learnt how to speak Klingon, he has role playing sessions with his (closet) friends, he even had the basement turned into a federation interrogation room,,,,,,well, you can guess the rest.   So, yeah the niece came here to escape all that.

          Wow, well I do give him credit being a pure Trekie, if you do have a family you should not let a hobby drag you away from family. Has the father who is obsessed with StarTrek, seen anyone for his issues? I hope everything works out for you, if he feels that his children should not be around someone no matter the reasons it's his choice as parent. I worry about the kids though and what kind of upbringing they will have. In 20 or so years the landscape of society is going to change dramatically. If they grow up to think like him, they are going to have a tough time.
