I also think in the US there are regional differences that get confused with religious ones. For example the South truly gets a bad rap. Not for a second do I think people below the Mason-Dixon line are anything like their detractors say. They just do things a little differently.
For a long time I collected Chick comics just because they were so appalling. I don't believe they are representative of what the vast majority of Christians believe.

Christians or True Christians®
Liberals and conservatives both truly believe they got it right. I could care less what religion one wants to argue.
It still amounts to the follower, "I got it right'. Western progressives use the same books of ANY religion, to justify compassion and inclusion. I would argue to my fellow liberals that you do not take your holy writings literally word for word like a conservative Muslim or conservative Christian or conservative Jew.
Both conservatives and liberals use the same core books to justify sell of inclusion and sell of fear of outsiders. The further back in time you go in all of those religions the more intolerant of outsiders you see the majority behaving.
I am glad liberal theists don't act on every verse as literal, if humans didn't cherry pick we would still be as barbaric and the west never would have progressed.
