My parents disowned my brother and me because we're gay. My grandfather thought that they had behaved like assholes and welcomed us into his home. He was a wonderful, intelligent, gentle man - - and I'm not just saying that because he was always kind, open, and understanding with me. Everyone who knew him liked him.
He died in the late '90's. The funeral was packed. People were out on the front lawn, speakers were put on the porch of the church so folks could hear. My mother was there. Did her usual thing and lost her freakin' mind. Went around screaming at people about how he was burning in hell RIGHT THIS MINUTE!!! because he put up with sin. The preacher tried to tell her that Jesus ate dinner with "sinners" and stayed with them in their homes. She would have none of it. The cops were called, she went to jail. She was released to my Father's custody only after he promised to take her out of the town and never return.
So, the preacher didn't say it, but we can always rely on my nutjob funditard mother. She puts the "fun" in dysfunctional.
