The reason why they dare not think intelligently as to come to their own personally thought out and written up concept of existence, is because in their heart of hearts they know that with thinking on existence they will not otherwise than face God existing point blank eyeball to eyeball.
The answer to your question can be found in Quantum Field Theory. The Universe can exist because it must exist. "Non existence" is a non-sequitur, a physical impossibility, kind of like -350 Celsius.
