I've been witness to people being called racist names, and myself being called racist names more than I can count but I think the situation you're painting there sounds like the racism would have more of an impact because of the context of the situation.
If you're at a farmers market I imagine a lot of mostly middle class white people who would mostly be horrified at the word nigger used in a racist way towards a black man.
I've been called a white bastard and white trash a few times, my family got told we should sell our house and leave the area for being white. A white person being kicked in the face for being white, a pakistani slapping a black kid around the head and telling him to fuck off nigger, a white person putting a sign on a pakistani kids back that said "I am a paki" my teacher being threatened to have a brick thrown at him by a white person because even though my teacher was white he had an indian girlfriend.
In front of my house a group of Bengalis and Pakistanis were beating each other up then white people tried to split the fight up and they got beaten too.
A white person in my physical education class in school sat opposite this very overweight pakistani kid and called him abdulla the fat paki and made fun of him for about 45 minutes until he the pakistani kid just started crying.
That overweight pakistani kid did call black people niggers but not to their face, he was soft and would have got beaten.
Just a few instances off the top of my head, but those were mostly when I was in school . It's probably more shocking when older, middleclass people do it at a farmers market. It sounds like that old man had been teleported in from a colonial sailing ship from the 1800's.
Those were just instances of racism where the people said it to the race of people they were being racist against. I hear general racist opinions all the time off people when I go into work, probably a few times a week.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.
Impersonation is treason.
