Well the USA is quite different to a lot of other western nations, nearly every other western nation has an extensive welfare system and universal health care. The USA does not have that, also compared to countries like the Scandinavian, Low Countries, Australia and New Zealand there is much more government corruption. Also not to mention much lower trust of the government in the USA compared to the nations I have mentioned. Perhaps it is not surprising people in the USA are more religious, since they feel religious organizations can be trusted more than the government.
As an Australian I find the kind of anti-government sentiment sometimes expressed by some Americans quite bewildering. Not even most people considered politically conservative here have an inherent mistrust of the government. Only really the tiny minority of Evangelical Christians in Australia, mistrust the government to the degree many Americans do.
Might I add the USA is the only country in the western world I would be considered politically a "flaming pinko".
