Here's my simple rule:
Any religion that features a god who demands submission on pain of eternal torture is a dangerous religion.
The founder and prophets who followed can speak all they like about love and peace but if the prime directive is submission on pain of eternal torture, then we have a religion that will lead to violence and hatred time after time. All the talk of love and peace is just so much fluff that's quickly dumped when it comes time for the more important mission of saving souls from eternal torture. If the prospect of eternal torture is taken seriously and believed, than nothing is more important than saving loved ones from such a fate and everything can be justified to that end.
