The only thing scarier than not knowing the truth, is believing you KNOW the truth and realizing that it sucks.
I think the more we learn, the more people will turn to religion to adding a sense of mystery-- and to take away the sense of relentless deterministic machinery that a purely mathematical world view holds for them. "Yeah, I'm on welfare, and an unwed mother of 7, but. . . I can feel God at work in my life!"
This gets people out of bed and at least TRYING to keep up a lot better than, "Yup, I'm fucked. Fuckity fuckity fucked. There's no hope for me ever to enjoy any day in my life ever again, because I've made too many mistakes, and there's nothing in the Universe that will change that."
