In the end, we had an A-10 (or whatever the weird A-10 rip off Arma 3 has is called) rip it a new one, and also cleared up the rest of the infantry we clashed with.
The good news is that machineguns in Arma3 can sometimes take out light armoured vehicles like the BMP, so it's worthwhile hosing them down if you can, especially armoured cars, just blow out the tyres then spray the crew when they bail out.
My favourite MG for that sort of work is the big Navid 9.3mm, I like to cut the enemy's supply roads in KOTH with it, and it can also bring down choppers.
