Interestingly enough the serpent/Satan in that myth was god.
The underlying message behind the Adam and Eve myth is, a supreme being prefers to rule over ignorant creatures. If they can think like him and be like him and had they eaten of that other forbidden tree, after eating of the tree of knowledge, they'd have also been eternal like him.
Also, Christians that accept the poorly written fiction, that is a different human creation epic from that written in Genesis Chapter 1 as opposed to Chapter 2, do so because they feel it's all true. From a deep innermost sense of self, they accept what they're led to believe in that fable and what it says about their pathetic condition as people.
That humans should be ashamed of being human. That they should reign in the powerful creative energies they possess and not love themselves because being human is bad. While if they accept the god that created them that way loves them if they supplicate themselves and beg to be forgiven for being human, they'll be rewarded by being better people once they're dead.
Which is how god likes 'em. As we can read throughout the entire old testament. God createth and god murders. Because he's having a bad hair day and thought genocide was better than a comb over.
