Stalin killed millions of religious folks in his attempt to eradicate religion and build an atheist society. So saying that atheism wasn't any sort of motive is not accurate.
Of course, this doesn't speak for all atheist people, whom are vastly decent people. Just as the crusades doesnt speak for all Christians. I'll agree with you there.
His totalitarian communist ideology and megalomanic intolerance for opposition of any kind explain Stalin's actions pretty adequately, I think. And if more is needed, the positive belief that religion should be forcibly eradicated is a possible motivation, while not believing any God or gods are really real is not.
Ohh ok...
Of course he was intolerant of opposition. Most tyrants are. But I really don't like the double standard here. Yall are so quick to blame religion for evil deeds (and rightfully so a lot of the times), but when an atheist starts killing religious folks, destroying churches, taking away people's freedom of religion, and trying to make his country atheist... All of the sudden his atheism has nothing to do with his motivations? Come on...
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."
