Not sure why the movie decided to go off from the story though.
And didn't/wouldn't have made sense anyway because of the Golgafrinchan's that crash-landed on ancient Earth and screwed the program.

The book was a perfect piece of science fiction / comedy, and the film would have been so more successful if it had actually stuck to it. Marvin was rubbish; no offense meant to Alan Rickman, but he didn't have the voice or the attitude. Stephen Moore should have been hired to do Marvin and the whale (as in the original radio series) because Bill Bailey just wasn't the right character for it. Zaphod Beeblebrox was reduced from hyper-cool to a bumbling moron, and what happened to his two *actual* heads? The only decent portrayals of the characters were that of Arthur Dent and Trillian.
Yeah, I hated the film too ... loved the first two books (they went downhill after that), enjoyed the radio series but preferred the TV series (I suppose because I saw it first). I agree about the film except fro Trillian and Arthur ... I mean what was it with the romantic ending? Arthur couldn't have landed a girl like Trillian if he paid her!
Ah well.
