Oddly, if you look at the photo on the page you will see that the version they use contains diacritical marks. It cannot be both changed and unchanged at the same time.
Let us be clear on something. The notion that a fucking angel whispered in the ear of a sleeping carpet merchant in a cave is so preposterous that it rivals the origin tales of xtianity and judaism for lunacy.
Someone, however, compiled the book originally be it Uthman or one of the other early caliphs and probably for the same reason that Theodosius made jesusism the single religion of the Roman empire. To try to unite highly disparate peoples under one bullshit story that he could control. I find that process far more interesting in an intellectual sense than silly mythology.
The picture is of a modern Quran; it can be found here:

It's not a unique image; it's used in so many other websites.
Uthman gathered the separated pages of the book, considering the new lands getting into the Islamic belief and needing a Quran of their own; there weren't enough people memorizing the book. It was time for the separated pages to be joined together.
I can believe your assumption if there were different copies of the book in terms of content. Also; proof showed that populations that got into Islam didn't handle difference easily; they waged whole wars just for a tiny difference. But they never waged one for a difference in the Quran.
Uthman himself was butchered because of difference of opinions about a murder case.
Romans invented a new bible on the other hand.
