The girl's father killed her and then tried to commit hari-kari. He probably heard a voice that claimed it was Yahweh telling him to sacrifice his daughter as a sign of devotion to him like it Abraham & Isaac. Or he might a have made a vow to sacrifice the first person he saw in repayment for something Yahweh did for him like Jephthah did. It's biblical.
