Why, God? Why?!

Either it's because God loves us so he couldn't help but to create us or ... so that his creation brings him glory.

I remember watching a play by a Catholic playwright (Tom Dudzick, I think it was), and the main character was a boy preparing for his confirmation and he starts to question the whole religion thing, and at one point, someone says "He created us because he loved us" and the kid points out that doesn't make any damn sense. And the Dad rattles off an answer he almost certainly memorised from the Catechism as a kid because the nuns would have hit him with their rulers if he didn't.
