As with any other thing. People believe in it until they don't. People believe in santa, too...and then they don't. It's ludicrous to doubt the status of their santa belief in the past based upon their lack of santa belief today..or the ease(however that can be determined) with which they lost it. In any case..you'll find that falling out of belief is rarely easy, by any description.
